No traditional musician is better loved than Mississippi John Hurt. He has influenced innumerable musicians through the years and, five decades after his death, his songs and instrumentals continue to be played throughout the world by novice and professional guitarists alike.
Happy Traum was one of the young pickers whose playing style was deeply affected by John Hurt. He had the opportunity to hear the master up close at the legendary Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village, and has listened carefully to many of his recordings. Happy will demonstrate a few of Hurt's classic songs, analyzing his guitar technique and outlining ways that learning players can become more proficient with the alternating bass fingerpicking style that John Hurt personified.
