Whit Smith

Guitar stylist, Singer and Songwriter Whit Smith began his musical journey in the late 1970s. A kid obsessed with guitar, he played constantly at home or with his original hard rock band anywhere there were electric outlets or gangs of partying teenagers. Around the age of 20, Whit took his first formal music lessons with Chick Corea alumnus Bill Connors. Shortly afterward he began collecting and studying records of many different styles of vintage American music, from Bix Beiderbecke to Chet Atkins, steel guitar to classical piano! Incorporating everything he learned he formed the Hot Club of Cowtown in 1996, and together with this trio has toured steadily to this day and recorded over a dozen records. Performances from opening shows for Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Roxy Music , BBC television’s “Late Night with Jules,” to playing the far reaches of the globe for the US State Department have all been part of a busy itinerary for Whit and his guitar.

Whit is often asked about his musical influences: “I listen to many kinds of music. Mostly records from the 1930s through the 1960s. I gravitate towards that esthetic, but I listen to all different instruments and vocalists. It would be fair and accurate to say George Barnes, Tiny Moore, Django Reinhardt and Allan Reuss were my favorite guitar influences at first but I love Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Louis Armstrong and others, too. As for singers I love everyone from Marty Robbins to Anita O’Day! And to be truly fair I probably wouldn’t be a musician if it weren’t for Keith Richards and Eddie Van Halen. My playing is full of ingredients you may not expect. But you don’t have to know how the sausage is made to enjoy what’s on your plate!”
