"Exploring Alternate Tunings"
New tunings inspire new musical thoughts.... Alternate tunings let you play voicings and slide between chord forms that might be impossible in standard tuning, and working out familiar riffs in an unfamiliar tuning often suggests new sound patterns and variations. This clinic will de-mystify and unlock the wonderful world of alternate tunings and their avenues to musical expression.
We will begin with a brief section on getting in tune and tuning in alternate tunings. We'll then take a look at historic tunings and how standard tuning became the norm. From there we'll explore the world of alternate tunings, including but not limited to: how things you know in standard tuning can inform the learning process in an alternate tuning; common and not so common alternate tunings, from simple Dropped D and popular open tunings to some more complex alternatives; chord fingerings, barre chords and chord sequences; scales and understanding the notes on the fingerboard; and the strengths and limitations of each tuning will be discussed, to help you maximize your musical explorations.
Handouts will include lists of tunings; well-known songs, players and suggested books; and a song or two to take with you. Players of any level are welcome, beginner to advanced. You may record. Please no posting to the internet.
